Now let's (i.e. let us) discuss about the different skills in English.
In English there are four skills. They are known as four skills of English Language.
The Four Skills of English Language are:
1. Reading
2. Writing
3. Listening
4. Speaking
Reading is an activity. In an activity we pay attention. So whenever you are going to read a text, you have to be attentive. Without attention careful reading is not possible. There are certain techniques for reading a particular text. The reading techniques for various purposes are as follows:
a. Extensive
b. Intensive
c. Skimming
d. Scanning
Extensive reading means covering a large area. In other words, including or dealing with a wide range of information. Example: His knowledge of science is extensive.
Intensive reading means involving a lot of work or activity done in a short time. In other words, intensive reading is extremely thorough. Example, an intensive language course is going on at Khulais.
Skimming means gathering general information of a text. If you read a passage for general information it means you skim the text.
Example: We skim a magazine before buying.
Scanning means gathering particular information from a text. If you read a passage for a particular information it means you scan the text.
