LESSON 5
USEFUL HINTS FOR READING COMPREHENSION PASSAGES
The word ‘comprehension’ is the noun form of the verb 'comprehend' which means understanding. It means if you read a comprehension passage, you try to understand it. Reading without understanding is not reading. Here I would like to give you some tips/hints how to overcome the problem of reading comprehension. If you read any passage, always try to know what the passage is about. After that you try to understand the content and context of the passage. Since English is a rich language, it is necessary to have some idea about the content and the context. Content is the subject matter of a text/passage whereas context is the situation. You have to find out the meaning according to the context.
For example:
Marriage is an institution.
Here 'institution' means a custom or tradition. In different context, institution may have different meanings'.
Therefore, it is essential to understand the content and the context of the passage.
